Big round green illustration of a pea with a little face at the bottom, sporting a look of surprise about to turn into laughter.

Pea

I stayed on at the end of term
in my sophomore year at college
to work food service
in a dining hall for summer students.

Friends gone, nothing but work,
I’m miserable.
Do I really need cash this badly?

A fat green pea tumbles out of my dustpan
and frolics across the floor
like a roly-poly bodhisattva
laughing at his fate.
