Photo of a daffodil, brilliant yellow with six petals and a trumpet, It looks so healthy you might think it's immortal. The background is an out-of-focus mix of green, white, and blue-black, which sets off the flower beautifully.

Gratitude

On the last day of winter,
a lone daffodil flairs into bright yellow
in my neighbor’s planter box.

It gives me a burst of happiness
on this sad day
of too many cold disappointments,
and so I want to give thanks,
but how?

Then I see it,
the petal cylinder,
the tender trumpet,
like the mouthpiece
of an old-time telephone.

I lean down
and speak into it
one true thank you,
hoping the message gets through.

Black and white photo of a very simple, old-fashioned telephone, with the mouthpiece that looks very much like the mouthpiece of a daffodil, only in black instead of yellow. There's a black cylinder that holds up the mouthpiece, and on it is a hook where the ear piece hangs. with a wire running from it to the base. The base is maybe three inches high. In a circle around the top of it are white buttons with black numbers for dialing your call.
